The Cayman S wasn't just the first Cayman variant, it was the first Cayman, period. Porsche introduced the model for the 2006 model year as a fixed-roof, higher-performance sibling to the Boxster, and the S badge came standard from day one, positioned deliberately between the 911 Carrera and Boxster S in both price and capability.
Power comes from a 3.4-liter naturally aspirated flat-six making 295 hp and 251 lb-ft, drawing directly on Boxster S architecture but adding cylinder heads borrowed from the 911 Carrera S and the same VarioCam Plus variable valve timing system. A 6-speed manual came standard, with a 5-speed Tiptronic automatic available. Porsche quotes 0 to 60 mph in 5.1 seconds with the manual and a 171 mph top speed, numbers that held their own against the contemporary 911 Carrera in period testing, including laps at the Nürburgring that rivaled Porsche's own flagship.
Adding a fixed roof over the Boxster's convertible structure doubled the car's torsional rigidity, and Porsche used that stiffer foundation to sharpen the suspension tuning beyond what the Boxster S offered. Red brake calipers and a dual-tipped center exhaust set the S apart visually from the base car that would follow a year later, while options like Porsche Active Suspension Management and the Sport Chrono Package let buyers dial in the chassis further. As the car that launched the entire Cayman nameplate, the 987.1 S remains the benchmark against which every later Cayman variant is measured.
