The Cayman arrived as Porsche's first purpose-built coupe variant of the Boxster platform, unveiled at the 2005 Frankfurt Motor Show and launching for 2006 with the S trim first, a deliberate move that let the fastback coupe establish its own identity before a lower-priced base model followed a year later. Built on the second-generation Boxster's chassis but with a fixed roof and reworked rear structure, the Cayman was tuned to be the sharper, more track-focused half of the pairing from day one.

The Cayman S launched with a 3.4-liter flat-six borrowing cylinder heads from the Carrera and camshafts from the Carrera S, producing 295 hp and 251 lb-ft of torque, enough for a 5.1 second sprint to 60 mph with the standard 6-speed manual. The base Cayman followed for 2007 with a 2.7-liter version of the same architecture, at 245 hp and 201 lb-ft, paired with a 5-speed manual as standard and the 6-speed offered only as a rare upgrade. Both cars shared the Boxster's mid-engine layout and nearly identical chassis tuning, with the primary differences coming down to displacement, brakes, and wheel sizing rather than any fundamental change in character. The lineup carried through largely unchanged for 2007 and 2008 before Porsche introduced a comprehensively revised 987.2 generation for 2009, bringing direct injection engines and, for the first time in a Cayman, the PDK dual-clutch transmission.
