About this model 918 Spyder

The 918 Spyder arrived in 2013 as part of an era-defining trio alongside the McLaren P1 and LaFerrari, but Porsche's approach to hypercar performance was genuinely different from its rivals: rather than leaning purely on turbocharging or all-wheel drive like the 959 before it, the 918 used electrification itself as the performance breakthrough. It marked Porsche's first production hybrid, and it dipped that toe in with an 875 to 887 horsepower hypercar rather than anything modest.

Power comes from a 4.6-liter naturally aspirated V8 borrowed directly from the RS Spyder Le Mans Prototype racing program, making 599 hp on its own, paired with two electric motors, one driving the front axle independently for genuine all-wheel drive without a mechanical front driveshaft, the other integrated into the 7-speed PDK at the rear. Combined system output reaches 875 to 887 hp (sources vary slightly) and 944 lb-ft. Porsche quotes 0 to 60 mph in 2.6 seconds and a 214 mph top speed. A 6.8 kWh lithium-ion battery pack also allows up to 12 miles of pure electric-only driving, a genuine plug-in hybrid capability rather than just a performance-boosting hybrid assist.

Like the Carrera GT before it, the 918 uses a carbon-fiber-reinforced monocoque chassis, and an active rear wing tilts forward under heavy braking to increase downforce precisely when it's needed most. With the optional Weissach Package, adding further carbon fiber and magnesium components to reduce weight, the 918 became the first production car ever to break the 7-minute barrier at the Nürburgring Nordschleife, setting a 6:57 lap that beat the previous production car record by 14 seconds. Porsche built exactly 918 examples between September 2013 and June 2015, selling out by December 2014 despite an $845,000 starting price, and the car remains a landmark demonstration that hybrid technology could deliver genuine performance gains rather than compromise them.
