The Taycan is where Porsche's electric era began, and the first generation set out to prove that going electric didn't mean giving up the driving character that made the brand's name. Unveiled in September 2019 and arriving at US dealers for the 2020 model year, it launched with three trims: the 4S, Turbo, and Turbo S, with the entry-level rear-wheel-drive base model and the Cross Turismo wagon body following a year later for 2021, and the GTS and Sport Turismo joining in 2022 to round out the lineup. By the time the first generation wrapped up production for 2024, it had grown from three trims into a full family spanning three body styles and five performance tiers.

Every first-generation Taycan shares the same fundamental architecture: an 800-volt electrical system, still uncommon among EVs even years after launch, that enables genuinely fast DC charging without the massive cable gauge a lower-voltage system would require. A 2-speed transmission on the rear axle, paired with a single-speed unit up front on AWD models, is a rarity in the EV world and gives the Taycan both a stronger launch and better high-speed efficiency than a single-speed setup allows. Two battery sizes were offered across most of the range, a 79.2 kWh standard pack and a 93.4 kWh Performance Battery Plus, with the Turbo and Turbo S trims making the larger battery standard equipment rather than an upsell. Output spanned from 321 hp in the base rear-wheel-drive car up to 750 hp on overboost in the Turbo S, with 0 to 60 mph times ranging from 5.1 seconds down to 2.6 seconds depending on trim.

Body style availability varied by trim rather than applying uniformly across the lineup. The base Taycan and GTS were sedan-only propositions, the 4 and 4S were offered as sedan or Cross Turismo, and the GTS added a Sport Turismo option alongside its sedan. The Turbo and Turbo S were the only trims to span all three body styles from the very first Cross Turismo model year.
