The 718 Boxster launched for 2017 alongside its 718 Cayman sibling, and the change was the same significant one: for the first time in Boxster history, the base and S trims moved to turbocharged flat-four engines rather than the naturally aspirated sixes that had defined every Boxster before it. Like the Cayman, the nameplate reached back into Porsche history, taking the "718" name from the four-cylinder race cars of the late 1950s and early 1960s.

The base 718 Boxster used a 2.0-liter turbo-four at 300 hp, while the S stepped up to a 2.5-liter version at 350 hp, both improvements in outright output and torque over the outgoing naturally aspirated 981, even as the turbo-four's character divided enthusiast opinion. The GTS followed in 2.5-liter turbocharged form at 365 hp, before Porsche brought the flat-six back for 2020 with the GTS 4.0, at 394 hp, alongside a revived Boxster T built on the base car's turbo-four with an emphasis on chassis feel over outright power. The Spyder arrived using the same 4.0-liter six shared with the Cayman GT4, at 414 hp, with a manually operated lightweight top continuing the Spyder tradition of stripped-down purity. Porsche capped the generation with the Spyder RS in 2024, at 493 hp and borrowing its engine and much of its aero and chassis tuning directly from the 911 GT3, making it the most powerful and track-focused Boxster ever built. Porsche ended gas-powered 718 production in October 2025, with an all-electric successor on the PPE platform delayed into 2026 and beyond, closing out the naturally aspirated and turbocharged Boxster story entirely.
