The Macan was Porsche's answer to a question the brand hadn't seriously asked before: could a compact SUV actually drive like a Porsche. Unveiled at the 2013 Los Angeles and Tokyo auto shows, it launched in Europe during spring 2014 and reached US dealerships that same year as a 2015 model, built on a heavily reworked version of the Volkswagen Group's MLB platform shared with the Audi Q5. Porsche's engineering team used that shared foundation as a starting point rather than an endpoint, retuning suspension, steering, and chassis dynamics until the Macan earned a reputation as the sharpest-handling vehicle in its segment, gas or otherwise.

The lineup launched with just two trims, the Macan S with a 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 making 340 hp, and the Macan Turbo with a 3.6-liter twin-turbo V6 at 400 hp (440 hp with the optional Performance Package), both paired with all-wheel drive and a 7-speed PDK dual-clutch transmission. The range filled out for 2017 with two additions: a new entry-level Macan powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four at 252 hp, becoming the lightest and most agile car in the lineup despite its modest output, and the GTS, slotting between the S and Turbo with a 360-hp version of the S's V6, standard PASM, and a sport exhaust that quickly made it an enthusiast favorite. These early cars, retrospectively known as 95B.1, are identifiable by their split rear taillights, smaller 7-inch infotainment screen, and more analog cabin compared to what followed. Porsche also offered a Macan S Diesel in select markets during this run, though it was never sold in the US.

The 95B.1 era closed out with the 2018 model year largely unchanged as Porsche prepared for a mid-cycle refresh, with the Macan transitioning to the updated 95B.2 generation for 2019, bringing revised engines (including a shift to single-turbo Audi-sourced V6 architecture for the S), a sharper exterior, and a significantly larger touchscreen.
