About this model 911 Turbo & Turbo S (991.1)

Porsche timed the 991-generation Turbo to a genuine double anniversary, revealing it in 2013 to mark 50 years of the 911 and 40 years since the very first 911 Turbo prototype appeared at the IAA. US deliveries began for the 2014 model year and ran through 2016, and this generation brought a genuinely new chassis under the familiar shape, an entirely new all-wheel drive platform with a wheelbase stretched 3.9 inches longer than before.

Both cars share a 3.8-liter twin-turbo flat-six with direct injection and variable turbine geometry, the Turbo producing 520 hp and the Turbo S stepping up to 560 hp and 516 lb-ft, with torque spiking to 553 lb-ft under brief overboost. Both route power through a 7-speed PDK exclusively, no manual was offered, continuing the direction Porsche had taken with the GT3 the same year. The Turbo hits 60 mph in 3.2 seconds, the Turbo S in 2.9, both topping out at 197 mph.

The real engineering story here is the active aerodynamics system, a first for the 911 Turbo. A three-stage retractable front spoiler works with a height- and angle-adjustable rear wing, together switching between distinct aero modes at the push of a button while keeping front-to-rear lift balanced, something no other production car offered at the time. Porsche claimed the difference between modes was worth roughly two seconds around the Nürburgring. Active rear-axle steering and PDCC active anti-roll control, also new to the Turbo lineup, came standard on the Turbo S and available on the standard Turbo, along with full-LED headlights across both cars. The Turbo S added carbon-ceramic brakes, a two-tone black and red interior, and center-lock wheels as standard, equipment that would cost more than the price difference itself if optioned individually on the base Turbo.
