The 991 marked the biggest platform overhaul the 911 had seen in years, and Porsche used it to celebrate two milestones at once, the car's 50th anniversary and 40 years of the Turbo nameplate. Unveiled at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show, with US deliveries spanning the 2013 through 2016 model years, this generation brought a longer wheelbase, a lighter aluminum-steel body, and electric power steering to the 911 for the first time, all while still running purely naturally aspirated engines across the standard Carrera range, the last generation to do so.

The base Carrera, Carrera 4, and Targa 4 opened the range with a 3.4-liter naturally aspirated flat-six at 350 hp, while the Carrera S, Carrera 4S, and Targa 4S stepped up to a 3.8-liter engine making 400 hp, with PASM standard for the first time on the S. Porsche brought the GTS badge back in 2014, pushing that same 3.8-liter architecture to 430 hp across Coupe, Cabriolet, Carrera 4 GTS, and, for the first time, a Targa 4 GTS. At the top of the standard lineup, the Turbo and Turbo S carried a 3.8-liter twin-turbo six to 520 and 560 hp, introducing active three-stage aerodynamics to the 911 Turbo for the first time.

Porsche's GT department kept things naturally aspirated but controversially dropped the manual entirely at launch. The GT3 arrived PDK-only at 475 hp, the first 911 to use rear-axle steering, and the GT3 RS pushed that formula to 500 hp with a Turbo-derived widebody and a benchmark 7:20 Nürburgring lap. Enthusiast backlash over the missing manual eventually produced the 911 R, a limited 991-unit, manual-only take on the GT3 RS running gear, arguably the defining special edition of this generation. Porsche also built a run of true collector's items: the 50th Anniversary Edition, limited to 1,963 units; the Club Coupe, sold exclusively to Porsche Club of America members; and the Rennsport Reunion Edition, a 25-unit tribute built around the GTS.
