The 981-generation Boxster arrived for the 2013 model year on an entirely new platform, and it marked the moment Porsche's roadster stopped playing understudy to the 911. Wider, stiffer, and lighter than the outgoing 987, the 981 shared its cabin architecture and much of its engineering with the contemporary 911, closing the performance gap between Porsche's two-seat convertible and its flagship in a way no previous Boxster generation had managed.
The base 981 Boxster is powered by a 2.7-liter naturally aspirated flat-six making 265 hp and 206 lb-ft, replacing the outgoing 987's 2.9-liter unit despite the smaller displacement, thanks to more efficient combustion and reduced internal friction. A 6-speed manual is standard, with 7-speed PDK available. Porsche quotes 0 to 60 mph in 5.5 seconds with the manual, 5.0 seconds with PDK and Sport Chrono, and a 164 mph top speed, genuine gains over the previous base Boxster despite the engine's smaller size.
The new platform brought a longer wheelbase and wider front and rear track for sharper handling, along with an electromechanical steering system replacing the previous hydraulic setup, a change that drew some criticism from purists chasing outright feel but delivered real gains in efficiency and low-speed maneuverability. Auto start-stop technology, standard on this generation, further improved fuel economy without asking the driver to sacrifice performance. Combined with the shared 911 architecture underneath, the base 981 Boxster earned a reputation among reviewers as one of the best all-around handling cars in Porsche's entire lineup at its price point, regardless of the added power available from the S and GTS variants above it.
