The 981 brought the Boxster its most significant visual and structural redesign since the original 986, launching for 2013 with a wider, lower stance and a lighter aluminum-intensive body that mirrored the styling direction of the contemporary 981 Cayman. It marked the last generation before the Boxster moved to turbocharged four-cylinder power, making it the final chapter of the naturally aspirated flat-six Boxster.

The base car used a new 2.7-liter flat-six at 265 hp, while the Boxster S carried the existing 3.4-liter architecture, now producing 315 hp. Porsche expanded the lineup in 2015 with the GTS, adding 15 hp over the S for 330 hp along with a sportier bumper treatment and a longer standard equipment list. The generation reached its high point for the final 2016 model year with the Boxster Spyder, which borrowed a modified 3.8-liter flat-six directly from the 911 Carrera S, at 375 hp, making it easily the most powerful Spyder Porsche had built to that point and a genuine spiritual successor to the 987 Spyder and, further back, the 550 Spyder and 718 race cars of the 1950s and 60s. The Spyder came exclusively with a 6-speed manual and dropped the folding soft top for a lightweight manual roof, prioritizing purity and weight savings over convenience.
