Porsche gave the 928 its most significant update in 1987 with the introduction of the 928 S4, carrying over the 5.0-liter, twin-cam, 32-valve V8 that had debuted in the final US-market 928 S but wrapping it in a substantially revised body. Smoother front and rear bumpers, new taillights, and a redesigned dashboard and instrument cluster gave the car a more modern look in line with where Porsche's other transaxle models were heading, while a lighter clutch and revised suspension tuning sharpened the driving experience. The S4 pushed output to 316 hp and became the version most closely associated with the 928 at its peak.
Porsche added the 928 GT alongside the S4 in 1989, a manual-only variant sharing the S4's updated bodywork but tuned to 326 hp and aimed at buyers who wanted a sportier edge without stepping up to a full flagship model. The GT and S4 ran side by side through 1991, giving US buyers a choice between the more comfort-oriented S4 and the sharper, manual-only GT.
Porsche closed out the platform with the 928 GTS, which reached the US as an early 1993 model after a one-year sales gap in 1992. The GTS grew the V8 to 5.4 liters for 345 hp, added flared rear fenders to cover a wider rear track, and brought larger front brakes to match the increased performance. It was the fastest and most capable 928 Porsche ever built, and it closed out both the second generation and the model's entire eighteen-year production run when the last cars were sold in 1995.
