About this model 997 GT3 / GT3 RS

The 997.1 GT3 carries the last true Mezger racing engine ever fitted to a road-going 911, a lineage tracing directly back to Porsche's endurance racing program. Introduced for the 2006 model year, it brought the GT3 nameplate into the 997 generation while introducing adaptive suspension to the GT3 bloodline for the first time, and the GT3 RS that followed shortly after took that formula and stripped it down further for homologation purposes.

Both cars share a 3.6-liter naturally aspirated Mezger flat-six making 415 hp and 298 lb-ft, revving to an 8,400 rpm ceiling thanks to lightweight racing-derived internals including 30-gram lighter pistons and a titanium connecting rod and crankshaft assembly 600 grams lighter than standard. A 6-speed manual is the only transmission offered on either car, no automatic was ever available. The standard GT3 quotes 0 to 60 mph in roughly 4.3 seconds and a 193 mph top speed, with the GT3 RS running marginally quicker at 4.0 seconds and a 193 mph top speed of its own despite carrying a wider body.

The GT3 RS exists because Porsche needed a homologation base for its GT3 racing program, and it shows in nearly every detail. It's 44mm wider than the standard GT3 to accommodate fatter rear tires, with a polycarbonate rear window, carbon-fiber components, and a unique adjustable rear wing mounted over the engine lid for added downforce, all shaving weight versus the standard car despite the wider stance. A limited-slip differential and PASM adaptive suspension come standard on both cars, though the RS pairs them with a genuinely more aggressive chassis setup built for track use first and street use second. A Clubsport package was also offered on the RS, adding a roll cage and further stripping the interior for buyers planning to compete.
