About this model 997 Carrera / Carrera 4 / Targa 4

The 997 generation brought the 911 back to its roots after the polarizing 996, restoring round headlights and a more classic silhouette while quietly improving nearly everything underneath. Launched for the 2005 model year, the base Carrera lineup expanded to include all-wheel-drive Carrera 4 and Targa 4 variants, giving buyers the flexibility to choose their preferred layout without sacrificing the core driving experience.

Power comes from a 3.6-liter naturally aspirated flat-six making 325 hp and 273 lb-ft, an evolution of the 996-generation engine rather than an entirely new design. A 6-speed manual came standard, with a 5-speed Tiptronic S automatic available. Porsche quotes 0 to 60 mph in 4.8 seconds and a 177 mph top speed for the rear-wheel-drive Carrera coupe, with the Carrera 4's all-wheel-drive system and the Targa 4's glass roof adding weight that trims those figures slightly.

The Carrera 4 brought a 44mm wider rear track to house its all-wheel-drive hardware, while the Targa 4 paired that same drivetrain with a distinctive glass panoramic roof and a practical opening rear tailgate, a layout unique to the Targa nameplate. A newly variable steering ratio, sharper past 30 degrees of wheel input, gave the whole lineup a noticeably more direct feel than its predecessor. This generation is also known among buyers for a genuine engineering weak point, the intermediate shaft (IMS) bearing, a consideration worth knowing when sourcing parts and maintenance history for any 997.1 example.
