Porsche introduced the GTS badge to the 911 lineup for the first time with the 997.2 generation, debuting at the 2010 Paris Motor Show to close a gap the enthusiast community had been pointing out for years: the jump from Carrera S to GT3 felt too large, and the GTS was built specifically to bridge it. Available as both rear-drive Carrera GTS and all-wheel-drive Carrera 4 GTS, it quickly became recognized as the most complete naturally aspirated 911 of this generation.
Power comes from the same 3.8-liter direct-injected flat-six found in the Carrera S, but with a resonance intake manifold using six vacuum-controlled tuning flaps instead of the S's single flap, lifting output to 408 hp, 23 hp over the S, while narrowing the gap to the 435 hp GT3. Torque holds at 420 Nm (310 lb-ft) but arrives 200 rpm earlier than in the S. A 6-speed manual comes standard, with 7-speed PDK available. Porsche quotes 0 to 60 mph in around 4.4 seconds for the manual coupe and a 190 mph top speed, four km/h faster than the equivalent Carrera S.
Both the rear-drive GTS and all-wheel-drive Carrera 4 GTS uniquely wear the 44mm-wider Carrera 4 body, meaning even the rear-drive version gets the wider stance and 305-section rear tires normally reserved for AWD models, a detail unique to the GTS within the Carrera lineup. Standard equipment bundled in items that were optional elsewhere: PASM Sport suspension, Sport Chrono Plus, a sports exhaust with center-exit dual tailpipes, Alcantara interior trim, and center-lock wheels. Production was limited and short, roughly 2,800 Carrera GTS coupes and only around 1,600 Carrera 4 GTS coupes were built globally across the 2010-2012 run, making these among the rarest and most sought-after 997.2 variants today.
