About this model 997.2 GT3 RS 4.0

If the standard GT3 RS represented the Mezger engine's peak, the RS 4.0 was Porsche's final, unrestrained farewell to it. Launched in 2011 as the true swan song for both the 997 generation and the legendary engine architecture that traced back to Hans Mezger's work on the GT1 Le Mans racer, Porsche's own GT boss Andreas Preuninger described the car as having been "built around the engine." No future GT3 would use this engine family again.

At 4.0 liters, it's the largest displacement engine ever fitted to a production 911, built using a crankshaft taken directly and unmodified from the GT3 RSR race car along with forged titanium connecting rods. Output reaches 500 hp at a screaming 8,250 rpm and 339 lb-ft, a specific output of 125 hp per liter that remains remarkable for a naturally aspirated engine. Power routes exclusively through a 6-speed manual with circuit-oriented gearing, the only transmission ever offered. Porsche quotes 0 to 60 mph in 3.8 seconds and a 193 mph top speed, with a Nürburgring lap of 7 minutes 27 seconds.

Weight-saving measures pushed curb weight down to roughly 2,998 lbs, using carbon-fiber front fenders and hood, lightweight carpeting in place of sound insulation, and thinner window glass throughout. New front winglets and a distinct rear wing set it apart visually from the standard GT3 RS, both aimed squarely at homologating the 2011 GT3 RSR racecar for competition. Porsche built just 600 examples worldwide, with roughly 126 to 141 reaching the United States, making the RS 4.0 the rarest and most valuable modern 911 GT car. It stands as the last manual-only GT3 RS and the final production Porsche 911 ever built with the Mezger engine.
