About this model 996 Turbo / Turbo S

The 996 Turbo marks the moment forced induction joined the water-cooled 911 era, and it did so with genuinely elite pedigree. Its 3.6-liter twin-turbo flat-six derives directly from the 1998 Le Mans-winning 911 GT1 race car, the same Mezger engine family underpinning the contemporary GT3, giving the Turbo a level of motorsport lineage no competitor could match. Deliveries began in mid-2000 as a 2001 model, with a Cabriolet joining for 2003.

The standard Turbo makes 415 hp and 415 lb-ft, sent through all-wheel drive via a 6-speed manual or, for the first time on a forced-induction 911, an optional 5-speed Tiptronic automatic. Porsche quotes 0 to 60 mph in around 4.2 seconds with the manual and a 189 mph top speed, making it briefly the fastest road-legal 911 built to that point, a title it held only until the GT2 arrived. Starting for the 2002 model year, the optional X50 Powerkit added larger turbochargers, bigger intercoolers, remapped engine management, and a reinforced gearbox, lifting output to 444 hp and 457 lb-ft, dropping the sprint to 60 mph to around 4.0 seconds and pushing top speed to 193 mph.

The 2005 Turbo S made that X50 upgrade standard equipment rather than an option, arriving as a send-off model for the final year of 996 production. It paired the 444 hp powertrain with Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes as standard, itself a first for a Turbo model at the time, rather than a costly add-on.
