About this model 996.2 GT3

The GT3 that reached North American dealerships for 2004 marks the first time American buyers could order this nameplate at all, since the original 996.1 GT3 was never sold stateside. Porsche used that gap to bring the second-generation GT3 to market as a genuinely improved car, refining nearly everything about the formula rather than simply repeating the European-only original.

Power comes from the Hans Mezger-designed 3.6-liter flat-six, tracing its lineage directly to the Le Mans-winning GT1 race car, now with longer titanium connecting rods, lighter forged pistons, and an upgraded VarioCam system pushing output to 381 hp and 284 lb-ft, up from 360 hp in the European-only original. A 6-speed manual is the only transmission offered, no automatic was ever available on any GT3. Porsche quotes 0 to 60 mph in 4.0 to 4.3 seconds depending on source, and a 190 mph top speed, with period testing recording 1.03g on the skidpad, among the highest figures ever logged by a street-legal production car at the time.

The dry-sump Mezger engine, built with a nitride-hardened crankshaft on eight main bearings and mounted through a GT3-specific lubrication system to fit the standard 996 engine bay, revs to an 8,200 rpm redline and remains completely unaffected by the intermediate shaft (IMS) bearing concerns that trouble other water-cooled 996 engines. Six-piston front calipers replaced the smaller units on the original GT3, and Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes became available as a factory option for the first time on this generation. A redesigned front fascia, new rear wing, and lightweight wheels rounded out the visual changes, while a stripped-down Clubsport package added a full roll cage, racing seat, and six-point harness for buyers planning genuine track use over street duty.
