About this model 911 Carrera 4S

The 996 Carrera 4S arrived for the 2002 model year as part of the broader 996.2 facelift, and it occupies a genuinely unique spot in 911 history. Rather than adding power over the standard Carrera 4, Porsche gave the 4S the 911 Turbo's actual widebody shell, its brakes, and its suspension hardware, wrapped around the naturally aspirated Carrera engine, a combination Porsche has never repeated in quite the same way since.

Power comes from the same 3.6-liter naturally aspirated flat-six as the standard Carrera and Carrera 4, making 320 hp and 273 lb-ft, with no power advantage over the base cars it's built alongside. A 6-speed manual is standard, with 5-speed Tiptronic S available. Porsche quotes 0 to 60 mph in around 5.1 seconds and a 174 mph top speed, performance figures matched by the standard Carrera 4, since the 4S trades power for chassis hardware rather than outright speed.

What the 4S actually delivers is the Turbo's wider rear bodywork and track, its steel brake discs with the same red-calipered fixed calipers, its specific suspension tuning lowered 10mm, and even the Turbo's front-axle pivot bearing optimized for brake cooling. PCCB ceramic brakes were offered as a factory option, distinguished by yellow calipers versus the standard steel setup's red. Porsche Stability Management came standard, working alongside the viscous-coupling all-wheel-drive system to route up to 40 percent of torque forward when needed. This remains a genuinely distinctive chapter in 911 history: no subsequent generation's non-turbo Carrera variant has worn the actual Turbo body and brake package quite this directly again, making the 996 4S a favorite among enthusiasts who want Turbo presence without turbo complexity.
