The Carrera S has long been the 911 most enthusiasts point to as the sweet spot of the lineup, more power and standard equipment than the base Carrera, without stepping into GT3 or Turbo territory. For 2020 through 2024, the Carrera S, Carrera 4S, and Targa 4S ran the 3.0-liter twin-turbo flat-six at 443 hp and 390 lb-ft, a 23 hp jump over the outgoing 991.2 generation.
The bigger story for this generation was the transmission. The S launched exclusively with the new 8-speed PDK, but starting with the 2020 model year, Porsche brought back a 7-speed manual as a no-cost option on the S and 4S, paired with Sport Chrono. It was a deliberate answer to purist demand, and it made this generation of Carrera S the most configurable in the lineup, no small thing for buyers who wanted three pedals without giving up the S badge. The Targa 4S kept its signature retractable hardtop and roll hoop, and like the 4S, added all-wheel drive to the platform.
