Porsche had never built a factory off-road 911, until the Dakar. Unveiled at the 2022 Los Angeles Auto Show, it pays tribute to the 953's outright victory at the 1984 Paris-Dakar Rally, the same event that marked the first use of all-wheel drive in a 911. US deliveries began in spring 2023 for the 2023 model year, with production capped at 2,500 units worldwide and every allocation spoken for before the car even hit the line.
Under the body, it's built from the Carrera 4 GTS, carrying over that car's 3.0-liter twin-turbo flat-six at 473 hp and 420 lb-ft, along with PTV Plus, rear-axle steering, and PDCC. What makes it a Dakar is everything Porsche wrapped around that platform. Ground clearance rises 50mm over a standard 911 with Sport Suspension, adjustable another 30mm higher via a hydraulic lift system, and it rides on Pirelli Scorpion all-terrain tires from the factory. Sport Chrono adds two driving modes you won't find on any other 911, Offroad and Rallye, tuned specifically for loose surfaces. Standard Race-Tex upholstery and a rear seat delete keep weight in check, and Shade Green arrived as a Dakar-exclusive color.
The optional Rallye Design Package pushed the heritage angle further, a two-tone White and Gentian Blue Metallic livery with a customer-chosen start number, a direct nod to the 1984 winning car. It's the kind of factory option that turns a limited-production car into an instant collectible, and clean examples with the package now command a premium over cars in solid colors.
