The 991 generation represented the biggest platform change the 911 had seen in years. Porsche unveiled it at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show as an all-new design, with a longer wheelbase, wider front track, and aluminum-steel composite construction that improved handling while cutting weight, US deliveries began for the 2012 model year and carried through 2016 for the naturally aspirated Carrera range.
The base Carrera carried a 3.4-liter naturally aspirated flat-six making 350 hp and 287 lb-ft, distinct from the larger 3.8-liter engine reserved for the Carrera S. It came standard with the world's first 7-speed manual transmission, an unusual configuration at the time, with the 7-speed PDK available as the automatic alternative. Electric power steering arrived across the range for the first time on this generation, a change that drew some criticism from enthusiasts used to the previous hydraulic setup, though it brought efficiency gains in return.
Porsche introduced the all-wheel drive Carrera 4 in 2012 alongside the base range, sharing the same 3.4-liter engine and output in a widened body. The Targa 4 arrived later, launching for the 2014 model year, bringing back Porsche's signature retractable roof mechanism with a modernized automated opening sequence, standard all-wheel drive only, no rear-wheel drive Targa was offered this generation.
