The Carrera S got the same twin-turbo treatment as the base Carrera when Porsche revealed the 991.2 generation at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 2015, with US deliveries beginning for the 2017 model year. Porsche moved the S away from its outgoing naturally aspirated 3.8-liter engine entirely, replacing it with the same 3.0-liter displacement as the base Carrera, but tuned differently to keep real separation between the two trims.
The Carrera S engine uses different turbochargers with modified compressors along with a model-specific exhaust and unique ECU tuning, producing 420 hp and 368 lb-ft, a 20 hp gain over the outgoing naturally aspirated S and 50 hp over the new base Carrera. That's enough for a 3.7 second run to 60 mph with the PDK and Sport Chrono Package, and a 191 mph top speed. Buyers chose between the standard 7-speed manual or the optional 7-speed PDK, and for the first time, PASM adaptive suspension came standard on every Carrera model in the lineup, not just the S, though the S Coupe still got the sportier setup dropping ride height 10mm.
Porsche rounded out the range with the all-wheel drive Carrera 4S, sharing the same 420 hp engine in a widebody shell, and the Targa 4S, pairing that AWD powertrain with the signature retractable roof mechanism that's defined the Targa nameplate since the 1960s. All three trims picked up the same styling updates as the rest of the 991.2 range: reshaped headlights with four-point LED daytime running lights, integrated door handle recesses, and Panamera-sourced taillights.
