Porsche unveiled five new GTS variants at once at an off-site event during the January 2017 North American International Auto Show, expanding the GTS badge across Coupe and Cabriolet body styles for the first time in this generation, plus the Targa 4 GTS with its signature retractable roof. It marked the transition of the GTS badge into the turbocharged era, and enthusiasts got a genuinely potent result.
Every GTS variant shares the same 3.0-liter twin-turbo flat-six, here fitted with larger turbochargers than the standard Carrera S engine, delivering 450 hp and 405 lb-ft, 30 hp over the S and 20 hp over the previous naturally aspirated GTS. A 7-speed manual came standard across the line, with the 7-speed PDK offered as the sole option, and Porsche made PASM adaptive suspension standard on every GTS variant, with the Coupe getting the sportier PASM Sport setup dropping ride height 10mm. The quickest of the bunch, the Carrera 4 GTS Coupe with PDK, hit 60 mph in 3.6 seconds and topped out at 191 mph, while the rear-wheel drive GTS Coupe with manual reached 193 mph flat out.
Porsche built the GTS around the idea of bundling the best options into one cohesive package rather than inventing new hardware. Beyond the engine, every GTS came with the Sport Chrono Package, a center-mounted sport exhaust, the wider Carrera 4 body regardless of drivetrain, and 20-inch center-lock wheels in satin black borrowed from the Turbo S. The Targa 4 GTS paired that same drivetrain and styling with standard all-wheel drive and the retractable Targa roof mechanism.
