The GT2 badge has always meant the most extreme, least forgiving 911 Porsche builds, and the 991.2 GT2 RS took that reputation further than any GT2 before it. Porsche unveiled it at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in the UK on June 30, 2017, with production running through the 2018 and 2019 model years, and it arrived already wearing the title of the most powerful and fastest street-legal 911 the company had ever made.
Porsche started with the 3.8-liter twin-turbo flat-six from the 991.2 Turbo S and reworked nearly everything, larger turbochargers, revised intake and exhaust systems, higher boost pressure, and a water injection system to cool the intake charge under sustained hard use, a first for a road-going 911. The result is 700 hp at 7,000 rpm and 553 lb-ft, delivered exclusively through a 7-speed PDK bolted rigidly to the chassis, Porsche skipped a manual entirely on this one in favor of outright speed. That's enough for a 2.7 second run to 60 mph and a 211 mph top speed. Just months after its reveal, the GT2 RS backed up the numbers with a 6:47.3 lap of the Nürburgring Nordschleife, at the time the fastest production car lap ever recorded there, beating hypercars costing several times its price.
Weight savings run through nearly every panel. The hood, front fenders, and rear wing are all carbon fiber reinforced plastic, and the optional Weissach Package adds a carbon fiber roof, magnesium wheels, and a titanium roll cage, dropping curb weight further still, from 3,241 lbs down to 3,175 with the package fitted. Inside, carbon fiber bucket seats and a roll cage make clear this car was built with the track as its primary purpose, road use came second.
