The 991.2 update marked a genuine turning point for the base 911, and not everyone was happy about it at first. Unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 2015, with US deliveries beginning for the 2017 model year, the 991.2 Carrera dropped naturally aspirated power entirely in favor of a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter flat-six, the first time turbos had made their way into the entry-level 911 outside the dedicated Turbo models.
The new engine made 370 hp and 331 lb-ft, a 20 hp gain over the outgoing naturally aspirated 991.1 Carrera, but the real story was torque, arriving 44 lb-ft higher and available from just 1,700 rpm all the way to 5,500. That translated directly to real-world pace, 0 to 60 mph dropped to 4.0 seconds with the PDK and Sport Chrono, a genuine improvement over the old car, with a 183 mph top speed. Buyers still got a standard 7-speed manual, with a 7-speed PDK as the alternative, and PASM adaptive suspension became standard across the board for the first time, lowering ride height 10mm and sharpening body control.
Porsche rounded out the range with the all-wheel drive Carrera 4, sharing the same engine and output as the rear-drive car, and the Targa 4, which paired that all-wheel drive layout with Porsche's signature retractable roof mechanism. Visual updates across the line included new headlights with four-point daytime running lights, integrated door handle recesses, and taillights borrowed from the incoming Panamera.
