The original Cayman arrived as an entirely new idea for Porsche: a fixed-roof coupe built on the Boxster platform, sitting between the Boxster and 911 in both price and performance. Porsche launched the Cayman S first, and the base 2.7-liter Cayman followed shortly after, giving buyers a more attainable entry point into the mid-engine hardtop without giving up the Boxster-derived chassis that made the S so well regarded.
Power comes from a 2.7-liter naturally aspirated flat-six, carried over from the contemporary Boxster, making 245 hp and 201 lb-ft. A 5-speed manual was standard at launch, with a 6-speed manual and 5-speed Tiptronic automatic available. Porsche quotes 0 to 60 mph in the mid 5-second range and a 160 mph top speed, modest numbers by today's standards but genuinely competitive against rivals of the era.
The base Cayman shares its chassis, hydraulic steering, and mid-engine layout directly with the Cayman S, differing mainly in engine output, brakes, and wheel sizing. That hydraulic steering rack in particular has become a defining trait for enthusiasts revisiting this generation, offering a level of road feel that later electric-assist systems have struggled to match. This early 987.1 car predates the direct-injection upgrades and IMS bearing revisions that came with the 2009 facelift, making it a distinct and increasingly appreciated chapter in Cayman history for buyers who value analog character over outright numbers.
