About this model 987 Boxster

The second-generation 987 Boxster arrived for the 2005 model year as a genuine ground-up redesign, with Porsche claiming roughly 80 percent new content despite the car's familiar silhouette. The interior in particular borrowed heavily from the contemporary 997-generation 911, giving the base Boxster a noticeably more upscale, mature feel than the outgoing 986 while retaining the mid-engine layout that had made the original such a success.

The base 987 Boxster carries over a 2.7-liter naturally aspirated flat-six, now making 240 hp and 199 lb-ft thanks to a redeveloped intake manifold and revised injection system, up from the outgoing 986's 228 hp. A 5-speed manual came standard, with a 6-speed manual and 5-speed Tiptronic S automatic also available depending on model year. Porsche quotes 0 to 60 mph in around 5.9 to 6.2 seconds and a 159 mph top speed. A running update for the 2007 model year lifted output slightly to 245 hp.

The 987's new chassis brought a stiffer structure and revised suspension geometry than the 986, along with hydraulic power steering that remains a favorite among enthusiasts revisiting this generation for its directness and feel. Porsche Stability Management and Porsche Active Suspension Management both became available for the first time on the base car, letting buyers dial in genuinely sharper dynamics as an option. Worth noting for buyers: 987.1 cars, particularly those built before 2006, retain the M96/M97 engine architecture and its associated intermediate shaft (IMS) bearing concern, an issue Porsche wouldn't fully resolve until the direct-injected 987.2 refresh arrived for 2009.
