The 987.2 Boxster Spyder debuted at the 2009 Los Angeles Auto Show as, at the time, the lightest car in Porsche's entire model range, a genuine return to the purist Spyder philosophy that traces back to the original 550 Spyder of 1953. Where the Boxster S emphasized refinement, the Spyder stripped things back down to essentials, delivering the sharpest, most focused driving experience the 987 platform ever offered.
Power comes from the same 3.4-liter direct-injected flat-six as the Boxster S, tuned slightly higher to 320 hp and 273 lb-ft, a 10 hp bump over the S. A 6-speed manual is standard, with 7-speed PDK available, and with PDK, Sport Chrono, and Launch Control, Porsche quotes 0 to 60 mph in 4.8 seconds. Weight savings, roughly 176 lbs versus the Boxster S, bring curb weight down to around 2,800 lbs, giving the Spyder a genuinely exceptional power-to-weight ratio for a naturally aspirated roadster of this era.
Weight reduction runs throughout the car: a lightweight aluminum hood and door panels, a manually operated soft top stored beneath a distinctive double-hump aluminum decklid, and a larger fixed rear spoiler for added stability at speed. Sport suspension lowered 20mm sharpens turn-in further, while lightweight 19-inch wheels and minimal standard equipment, no radio or climate control unless specified at no extra cost, kept the focus squarely on driving feel over creature comforts. Fewer than 2,000 were sold in North America, and the Spyder has since become a genuine future-classic among 987 enthusiasts, prized for combining the platform's excellent chassis with a purity of experience no other 987 variant quite matches.
