The 2009 facelift hit the Cayman S harder than any other variant in the lineup, trading the outgoing car's port-injected 3.4-liter for a direct-injected version of the same displacement that closed the gap to genuinely quick territory. It was the update that made the Cayman S feel like a fully modern sports car rather than a well-sorted holdover.
The 987.2 Cayman S carries over its 3.4-liter flat-six displacement but adds direct fuel injection, lifting output from 295 hp to 320 hp and torque to 273 lb-ft. A 6-speed manual is standard, and this generation introduced 7-speed PDK as an option, replacing the old Tiptronic automatic. Porsche quotes 0 to 60 mph in around 4.9 seconds, with PDK and Sport Chrono cars cracking under 5 seconds, and a 172 mph top speed.
Direct injection didn't just add power, it eliminated the intermediate shaft (IMS) bearing design that had been the single biggest reliability concern surrounding earlier water-cooled Porsche flat-sixes, making the 987.2 S a meaningfully safer used-market bet than its 987.1 predecessor. Standard 18-inch wheels, updated LED lighting, and a reshaped rear diffuser rounded out the visual refresh, while the hydraulic steering rack that enthusiasts still praise today carried over unchanged.
