The 2009 facelift hit the Boxster S with two genuine firsts at once: an entirely new 9A1 engine architecture and, for the first time on any Boxster S, direct fuel injection. Porsche used the S specifically to showcase what the technology could do, delivering a meaningful jump in both power and efficiency that the base car's port-injected engine couldn't quite match.
The 987.2 Boxster S keeps its 3.4-liter displacement but adds direct fuel injection, lifting output from 295 hp to 310 hp and torque to 266 lb-ft. A 6-speed manual is standard, and this generation introduced 7-speed PDK as an option, replacing the old Tiptronic S automatic entirely. Porsche quotes 0 to 60 mph in around 5.2 seconds with PDK and a 169 mph top speed, genuine gains over the outgoing 987.1 S despite unchanged displacement.
Direct injection gave the S a noticeably improved power-to-weight ratio, Porsche quoted at the time as 9.7 lb per horsepower, among the best in the segment for a naturally aspirated roadster. The new 9A1 engine architecture carries the same reputation for long-term durability across the S as it does in the base car, making this a strong entry point for buyers who want the added performance without added ownership concerns. A limited Boxster S Black Edition followed for 2011, bumping output further to 320 hp and limited to 987 units worldwide, a fitting nod to the platform's model designation. Combined with hydraulic power steering carried over from the previous generation and an available PCM 3.0 touchscreen system, the 987.2 Boxster S is widely regarded by enthusiasts as the high point of the standard Boxster lineup before the 981 generation arrived.
