The 2009 facelift brought the single biggest mechanical shift in Boxster history up to that point: an entirely new engine architecture, the 9A1 family, replacing the M96/M97 design that had powered every Boxster since 1997. The base 987.2 Boxster grew from 2.7 to 2.9 liters, making 255 hp and 214 lb-ft using conventional port injection rather than the direct-injection system Porsche reserved for the S. A 6-speed manual is standard, and this generation introduced 7-speed PDK as an option, replacing the old Tiptronic S automatic entirely.
