About this model 986 Boxster S

The Boxster S arrived for the 2000 model year and answered the one real criticism leveled at the original Boxster: it simply needed more power. Porsche responded by giving the S a genuinely different engine rather than just a tune-up of the base car's unit, and the result turned the Boxster from an appealing roadster into a legitimate performance car in its own right.

Power comes from a 3.2-liter naturally aspirated flat-six, sharing the base car's stroke but with a larger bore, making 250 hp and 225 lb-ft, a 25 percent gain over the original 2.5-liter engine. A 6-speed manual is standard, the first six-speed offered on any Boxster, with 5-speed Tiptronic automatic available. Porsche quotes 0 to 60 mph in around 5.7 seconds and a 162 mph top speed. The 2002 facelift brought revised engine management and a new intake manifold, lifting output to 258 hp while also adding a glass rear window in place of the original plastic piece and Porsche Stability Management as an available option.

Beyond the extra displacement, the S distinguished itself with red aluminum brake calipers and larger perforated discs borrowed from the contemporary 911 lineup, a third front air intake feeding an additional radiator, and a dual exhaust setup replacing the base car's single pipe. Standard 17-inch wheels, a three-spoke steering wheel, and white-faced gauges with a 180 mph speedometer rounded out the visual differences from the base car. In 2004, Porsche closed out the 986 generation with a Boxster S Special Edition commemorating the 1953 550 Spyder, limited to 1,953 units worldwide in a unique GT Silver Metallic finish with cocoa-brown leather, a fitting send-off for the model that established the Boxster S as the enthusiast's choice within the lineup.
