About this model 986 Boxster

The 986 Boxster is the car that saved Porsche. Launched for the 1997 model year after debuting as a concept at the 1993 Detroit Auto Show, it arrived at a moment when the company badly needed a commercial hit, and the Boxster delivered one, returning Porsche to its mid-engine roadster roots with a car built to be accessible in a way no 911 could be.

Early cars, built through 1999, use a 2.5-liter naturally aspirated flat-six with dual overhead cams, four valves per cylinder, and dry-sump lubrication, making 201 hp and 181 lb-ft. A 5-speed manual came standard, with 5-speed Tiptronic automatic available. Porsche quotes 0 to 60 mph in around 6.7 seconds and a 149 mph top speed for these early cars. For the 2000 model year, displacement grew to 2.7 liters with a longer stroke, revised Motronic engine management, and drive-by-wire throttle, lifting output to 217 hp and 192 lb-ft, a meaningful gain in both power and drivability. The 2002 facelift brought a further bump to 228 hp, along with a glass rear window replacing the original plastic piece, updated bumpers, and new wheel designs.

The 986 shares its front fascia, hood, fenders, and doors with the contemporary 996-generation 911, a design decision that helped Porsche control costs during a period when the company's survival wasn't guaranteed. Early 2.5-liter cars are known for a genuine mechanical weak point worth understanding before buying: porous engine blocks and the intermediate shaft (IMS) bearing issue that troubles many water-cooled Porsche flat-sixes of this era, both addressed by the time the 2.7-liter engine arrived. As Porsche's first mid-engine roadster since the 914, and the car most credited with restoring the company's financial footing in the late 1990s, the base 986 Boxster remains an accessible and historically significant entry point into air-cooled-adjacent Porsche ownership.
