The 981-generation Cayman arrived for the 2014 model year on an all-new platform, and it quietly reversed a longstanding Porsche habit of holding the Cayman back from the 911. Wider, longer, and lighter than the outgoing 987, the 981 shared its interior design language with the contemporary 991 911 and gave the Cayman genuinely sharper dynamics to go with it, closing the gap between Porsche's mid-engine coupe and its flagship.
The base 981 Cayman is powered by a 2.7-liter naturally aspirated flat-six, actually a reduction in displacement from the outgoing car's 2.9-liter, yet it makes 275 hp and 213 lb-ft, 10 hp more than the engine it replaced. A 6-speed manual comes standard, with a 7-speed PDK available. With PDK and Sport Chrono, Porsche quotes 0 to 60 mph in as little as 5.1 seconds, quick enough to beat some outgoing Cayman S models despite giving up a full liter of displacement, and EPA combined fuel economy reaching 26 mpg with PDK.
The new platform brought a longer wheelbase and wider track for improved stability, along with a lighter body structure that helped offset any weight added by the more sophisticated chassis. This was also the last generation of Cayman to run a naturally aspirated flat-six across the board before Porsche's move to turbocharged flat-fours with the 718 in 2017, making the 981 base car a favorite among enthusiasts who prioritize the character of a free-revving six over outright power figures.
