The Panamera 4S continued into the second-generation 971 lineup for the 2017 model year, though this generation dropped the previous rear-wheel-drive S trim entirely, leaving the 4S as the sole mid-tier gas model and the only path to the next performance step above the base Panamera and Panamera 4. It sits below the GTS and Turbo, and is offered exclusively with all-wheel drive.
Power came from a twin-turbocharged 2.9-liter V6, producing 440 hp and 405 lb-ft of torque, a significant jump over the base model's 330 hp single-turbo unit. Paired with the standard 8-speed PDK dual-clutch transmission, the 4S reached 60 mph in the low 4-second range and topped out at 179 mph.
Beyond the added power, the 4S came standard with larger brakes than the base models, along with the option for adaptive air suspension with Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM), rear-axle steering, and Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC), now using an electric rather than hydraulic system for the first time in this generation.
