The Panamera S and Panamera 4S launched alongside the Panamera nameplate itself, introduced at the 2009 Shanghai Auto Show as part of the original first-generation 970 lineup, sitting above the base V6 Panamera and Panamera 4 (which arrived later, for 2011) and below the Turbo. The S used rear-wheel drive while the 4S added all-wheel drive, giving buyers a choice of driven wheels at the same performance level.

Both used a naturally aspirated 4.8-liter V8 producing 400 hp (395 hp SAE) and 369 lb-ft of torque, paired with a standard 6-speed manual transmission or optional 7-speed PDK dual-clutch automatic. The rear-wheel-drive S reached 60 mph in about 4.6 to 4.8 seconds depending on transmission and topped out at 175 mph, while the all-wheel-drive 4S was slightly quicker off the line at 4.4 to 4.8 seconds to 60 mph, with the same 175 mph top speed.

As the volume performance models in the lineup, the S and 4S came standard with 18-inch wheels, bi-xenon headlights, and a leather interior, with options including adaptive air suspension (PASM), Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC), and the Sport Chrono Package for sharper throttle response and quicker shifts.
