The base Panamera and Panamera 4 joined the first-generation 970 lineup for the 2011 model year, arriving as the entry point below the Panamera S and 4S. The two shared the same drivetrain, with the Panamera running rear-wheel drive and the Panamera 4 adding all-wheel drive, giving buyers a lower-cost path into Porsche's four-door lineup.
Power came from a naturally aspirated 3.6-liter V6, essentially the same 4.8-liter V8 used elsewhere in the lineup with two cylinders removed, producing 300 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. The base Panamera was offered with a standard 6-speed manual transmission, a rare option in this segment, or the optional 7-speed PDK dual-clutch automatic. With the Sport Chrono Package, the Panamera reached 62 mph in as little as 6.1 seconds and topped out at 160 mph, while the all-wheel-drive Panamera 4 added a touch more capability at the expense of a small weight penalty.
Despite sitting at the bottom of the lineup, the base V6 models retained the same body, chassis, and available options as their V8 siblings, distinguished mainly by black brake calipers rather than the silver calipers on the S and 4S or red on the Turbo.
