The Cayenne S represented the sweet spot of Porsche's original SUV lineup, offering a genuine V8 driving experience without the Turbo's price premium, and it quickly became the volume seller among enthusiast buyers who wanted more than the base V6 delivered. It shared its fundamental chassis and platform with the base Cayenne but backed it with a proper naturally aspirated Porsche V8.
The 4.5-liter naturally aspirated V8 produced 340 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque, enough for a 0 to 60 mph time in the mid-6 second range, a substantial step up from the base V6 car. Unlike the Turbo and Turbo S, the Cayenne S rode on conventional steel coil springs rather than standard air suspension, though air suspension was available as a factory option for buyers who wanted the more adjustable ride height and comfort-oriented setup. A 6-speed manual transmission was standard, with a 5-speed Tiptronic automatic offered as an option, one of the few Cayenne generations where a V8-powered trim could still be had with a clutch pedal.
