The base Cayenne was the entry point into Porsche's first SUV, launching alongside the S and Turbo as proof that the Cayenne lineup wasn't only about V8 power. It shared its 3.2-liter V6 engine block with the Volkswagen Touareg, a partnership born from the shared platform underpinning the entire first-generation Cayenne, though Porsche's own suspension tuning and chassis calibration set it apart from its VW-badged cousin from the first mile behind the wheel.
The naturally aspirated 3.2-liter V6 produced 250 hp and 229 lb-ft of torque, giving the base Cayenne a 0 to 60 mph time in the 9-second range, noticeably more relaxed than its V8-powered siblings but still capable of genuine highway passing power. Unlike the Turbo and Turbo S, which came standard with air suspension, the base Cayenne rode on conventional steel coil springs, a setup that traded some ride comfort for simplicity and a lower price point. A 6-speed manual transmission was standard, with a 5-speed Tiptronic automatic available as an option, making this one of the relatively few Cayenne generations where a stick shift was offered on the base trim at all.
