The GT4 badge represents Porsche's answer to a problem enthusiasts had been complaining about since 2016: turbocharged flat-fours replacing the flat-six under the 718's rear hatch. Porsche fixed that emphatically with the second-generation 982 GT4, introduced for the 2020 model year, bringing a naturally aspirated flat-six back to the mid-engine lineup and building the most track-focused Cayman Porsche had built to that point.
At the heart of the car sits a 4.0-liter naturally aspirated flat-six, developed by Porsche Motorsport and shared with the 718 Spyder, making 414 hp and 309 lb-ft. It revs to an 8,000 rpm redline and pairs standard with a 6-speed manual transmission featuring an Auto Blip rev-matching function that can be switched off for those who prefer to heel-toe themselves. A PDK dual-clutch automatic joined the lineup as an option in later model years for buyers who wanted quicker shifts without giving up the flat-six. Porsche quotes 0 to 60 mph in 4.2 seconds for the manual, with a 188 mph top speed.
The chassis borrows the front axle setup directly from the 911 GT3, paired with a 718-specific rear suspension tuned for the mid-engine platform. Porsche Active Suspension Management comes standard with adaptive damping, and ride height drops 1.18 inches versus the standard Cayman. Camber, toe, ride height, and anti-roll bar settings are all manually adjustable, a rarity for a car this usable on the street. A mechanical limited-slip differential is standard, and the car's aerodynamics get real attention too: a redesigned rear diffuser and manually adjustable rear wing combine for roughly 50 percent more downforce than the outgoing 981-generation GT4. Standard brakes are lifted from the 911 GT3, with carbon-ceramic (PCCB) available as an option.
