Before Porsche brought the naturally aspirated flat-six back for the GTS 4.0, the original 718-era Boxster GTS made its case with turbocharged four-cylinder power alone, and it made that case surprisingly well. Launched for the 2018 model year, this GTS took the turbocharged architecture that enthusiasts had been skeptical of since the 718's 2017 debut and proved it could deliver genuine GTS-level performance in roadster form.
Power comes from the same 2.5-liter turbocharged flat-four found in the Boxster S, but with a new intake duct and optimized turbocharger lifting output to 365 hp and 309 lb-ft (317 lb-ft with PDK), a 15 hp gain over the S and up to 35 hp over the naturally aspirated GTS models that came before the 718 era. A 6-speed manual is standard, with 7-speed PDK available. Porsche quotes 0 to 60 mph in 3.9 seconds with PDK and Sport Chrono, 4.4 with the manual, and a 180 mph top speed for both.
The GTS bundled equipment that was optional elsewhere in the 718 lineup as standard: Sport Chrono Package, Porsche Torque Vectoring with a mechanical rear differential lock, and Porsche Active Suspension Management that drops ride height 10mm. Nearly all 317 lb-ft of torque arrives just off idle, below 2,000 rpm, giving the car a noticeably different character from the high-revving flat-six GTS that would eventually replace it, more instant and tractable in everyday driving, if less theatrical at the redline. For buyers cross-shopping this generation, it remains the last Boxster GTS built entirely around the turbocharged flat-four before Porsche brought the six back for good.
