Porsche brought the flat-six back to the Boxster GTS for the 2021 model year, replacing the turbocharged four-cylinder that had powered the previous GTS since 2018. It was a direct response to enthusiast demand, and Porsche marked the occasion further that same year by celebrating the Boxster nameplate's 25th anniversary with a limited-run special edition built on the exact same mechanical foundation.
The GTS 4.0 is powered by a 4.0-liter naturally aspirated flat-six, a detuned version of the 718 Spyder and Cayman GT4's engine, making 394 hp with 309 lb-ft (manual) or 317 lb-ft (PDK). A 6-speed manual is standard, with 7-speed PDK available, and the engine revs to a high-strung redline that rewards driving it hard. Porsche quotes 0 to 60 mph in 4.3 seconds with the manual, 3.8 seconds with PDK and Sport Chrono, and a 182 mph top speed with either transmission.
The Boxster 25 Years, limited to 1,250 units worldwide and based directly on the GTS 4.0 mechanically, celebrates the original Boxster concept car first shown at the 1993 Detroit Auto Show. Its signature Neodyme color, a warm copper-bronze, directly references the concept's distinctive shade, paired with a Bordeaux Red leather interior and matching soft top, pale gold trim on the front bumper and side intakes, and unique anniversary-specific wheels. Both cars share PASM adaptive suspension lowered 0.39 inches versus the standard 718 Boxster, along with Porsche Torque Vectoring and a mechanical limited-slip differential as standard equipment, giving buyers the choice between the GTS's understated performance focus or the 25 Years' visual tribute to where the entire Boxster story began.
