The base four-cylinder Macan launched for the 2015 model year as Porsche's most accessible SUV, and it arrived with an unusual distinction for the brand: it was the first Macan without a V6 under the hood, using a straight-four engine shared architecturally with the Audi Q5, its platform sibling. Despite the modest cylinder count, Porsche's tuning made it noticeably quicker than its Audi counterpart at launch.
Power comes from a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four making 237 hp and 258 lb-ft, paired standard with a 7-speed PDK dual-clutch transmission and all-wheel drive, no manual was offered on any Macan. Porsche quotes 0 to 60 mph in around 6.9 seconds and a 138 mph top speed. For the 2017 model year, output rose to 252 hp, and the 2019 model year facelift settled the figure at 248 hp with 273 lb-ft, part of a broader engine recalibration across the lineup.
Visually, the base Macan is easiest to identify by its dual exhaust tips, a deliberate contrast to the quad-pipe setups Porsche reserved for the S, GTS, and Turbo variants, along with standard 18-inch wheels rather than the larger sets found higher in the range. Despite sitting at the bottom of the Macan hierarchy, this car remains the lightest and most agile of the lineup, and it served as the genuine entry point into new Porsche ownership for many buyers during this generation, offering the brand's driving dynamics and badge at a price point no other Porsche could match.
