About this model 997 Turbo

The 997 Turbo that launched for the 2007 model year carries a distinction no 911 Turbo built since has matched: it's the last Turbo to use the legendary Mezger engine, a design with direct roots running back to the original 930 Turbo of 1975. It's also the car that introduced a genuine breakthrough in turbocharger technology to a production gasoline engine for the first time.

Power comes from a 3.6-liter twin-turbocharged flat-six making 480 hp and 460 lb-ft (502 lb-ft on overboost with the Sport Chrono Package), a 60 hp jump over the outgoing 996 Turbo despite unchanged displacement. That gain comes from Porsche's first production application of Variable Turbine Geometry, using electronically adjustable guide vanes to spool the turbos faster across the entire rev range, engineered to withstand exhaust gas temperatures up to 1,830°F. All-wheel drive is standard, with a 6-speed manual or 5-speed Tiptronic S automatic available. Porsche quotes 0 to 60 mph in 3.7 seconds with the manual, 3.4 with Tiptronic and Sport Chrono, and a 193 mph top speed.

The Turbo rides on the wider, stiffer Carrera 4 body shell, with aluminum doors and hood plus a carbon-fiber-reinforced engine lid keeping weight in check despite the added drivetrain hardware. Note that this generation received a mid-cycle running change for the 2009 model year: cars from that year carry an updated dashboard, redesigned steering wheel, revised infotainment system, and minor exterior updates compared to 2007 and 2008 models, so buyers and parts searches should confirm which spec a given 2009 car actually carries before ordering. No true "S" variant was offered on this generation, that designation returned with the following 997.2 Turbo.

  • Model year: 2007 to 2009 (997.1 generation, 2009 cars carry mid-cycle interior/exterior updates)
  • Engine: 3.6L twin-turbocharged Mezger flat-six with Variable Turbine Geometry, 480 hp, 460 lb-ft (502 lb-ft on overboost)
  • 0 to 60 mph: 3.4 seconds (Tiptronic S with Sport Chrono)
  • Transmission: 6-speed manual standard, 5-speed Tiptronic S available
  • Notable firsts: first production gasoline engine with Variable Turbine Geometry turbochargers; last 911 Turbo to use the Mezger engine
  • Available as: 911 Turbo (coupe, cabriolet, all-wheel drive)
