Where the base Carrera carried an evolution of the 996's engine, the S models introduced something genuinely new to the 997 lineup: a larger-displacement flat-six built specifically to widen the gap over the standard car. Launched alongside the base Carrera for the 2005 model year, the S badge quickly became the volume choice for buyers who wanted meaningfully more performance without stepping up to the Turbo.
The Carrera S is powered by a 3.8-liter naturally aspirated flat-six, achieved by increasing bore from 96mm to 99mm over the base 3.6-liter engine, making 355 hp and 295 lb-ft. A 6-speed manual came standard, with 5-speed Tiptronic S automatic available. Porsche quotes 0 to 60 mph in 4.6 seconds and a 182 mph top speed for the rear-wheel-drive coupe, two tenths quicker and 5 mph faster than the base Carrera.
The added torque output required Porsche to fit a stronger 6-speed manual gearbox than the one used in the standard Carrera, a detail worth knowing when sourcing drivetrain parts for these cars. As with the base lineup, the Carrera 4S added all-wheel drive and the wider rear track that comes with it, while the Targa 4S paired that AWD system with the model's signature glass roof and opening tailgate. This generation also debuted with Porsche's variable-ratio steering rack, sharpening turn-in beyond 30 degrees of input, giving the S models a noticeably crisper feel than their 996-era predecessors despite retaining the same fundamental water-cooled architecture.
