The 991.2 GT3 marked the moment Porsche brought back something enthusiasts had been asking for since the previous generation went PDK-only: a proper manual gearbox. Porsche unveiled it at the Geneva Motor Show on March 7, 2017, with the standalone GT3 Touring following that September at the Frankfurt Motor Show, and world market launch in June 2017 for the 2018 model year.
The naturally aspirated 4.0-liter flat-six carries over from the GT3 RS parts bin, tuned here to 500 hp, a 25 hp jump over the previous 991.1 GT3's 3.8-liter engine. For the first time on this generation, buyers could choose a 6-speed manual alongside the 7-speed PDK, both genuinely available rather than manual being an afterthought. Porsche backed the car up with a notarized 7:12.7 Nürburgring lap, a significant improvement over both the outgoing 991.1 GT3 and GT3 RS. Rear-axle steering carried over as standard, and ride height dropped 25mm below the Carrera S for genuine track capability alongside daily usability.
The Touring Package, introduced alongside the standard car for 2018, gave buyers everything the winged GT3 offered mechanically, but replaced the fixed rear wing with a more understated look and swapped in a leather-lined interior in place of the standard car's more track-focused cabin. It was the first time Porsche offered this kind of subtler GT3 alternative at a relatively accessible price point, previously the only manual-only GT alternative had been the limited and expensive 911 R.
