The 992 generation gave the 911 its widest body yet and a fully digital cockpit, while somehow finding room for more special editions than any generation before it. Porsche unveiled the 992 at the 2018 Los Angeles Auto Show, with US deliveries beginning for the 2020 model year and running through 2024, before the 992.2 facelift took over.

The base Carrera, Carrera 4, and Targa 4 opened the range with a 3.0-liter twin-turbo flat-six at 379 hp, while the Carrera S line stepped up to 443 hp through different turbochargers. The Carrera GTS family pushed that same displacement to 473 hp across Coupe, Cabriolet, Carrera 4 GTS, and Targa 4 GTS body styles, still offering a manual for buyers who wanted one, the last GTS generation to do so. At the top of the standard range, the Turbo and Turbo S carried a 3.7-liter twin-turbo six to 572 and 641 hp, both all-wheel drive and PDK only.

Porsche's GT department kept the naturally aspirated tradition alive with the GT3 and GT3 Touring at 502 hp, still offering a genuine 6-speed manual, and the GT3 RS pushed that architecture to 518 hp with a 6:49.328 Nürburgring lap. This generation also produced an unusual run of limited editions: the 911 S/T, a 1,963-unit manual-only tribute to the 911's 60th anniversary; the Dakar, the first factory off-road 911 ever built; and the Sport Classic, a manual-only, Turbo-engined homage to the 1970s Carrera RS.
