The 981 marked the most dramatic visual leap in the Cayman's history, launching for 2013 with a wider, lower stance and sharper styling that finally let the coupe stand fully apart from the Boxster it shared underpinnings with, rather than reading as a hardtop variant of it. Both the base Cayman and Cayman S launched together, a departure from the staggered S-first rollout of the previous two generations.

The base Cayman used a 2.7-liter flat-six at 275 hp, while the Cayman S stepped up to a 3.4-liter unit at 325 hp. Porsche filled out the range for 2014 with the Cayman GTS, slotting in above the S at 340 hp from the same 3.4-liter architecture with a standard sport exhaust, before capping the generation with the Cayman GT4 for 2015, a genuine departure from the rest of the lineup borrowing its 3.8-liter flat-six and much of its suspension hardware directly from the 911 GT3. At 385 hp and offered exclusively with a 6-speed manual, no PDK was ever available, the GT4 lapped the Nürburgring Nordschleife in the 7:40 range, a time that put it ahead of several contemporary supercars, and it remains one of the most celebrated Caymans Porsche has ever built. The 981 generation closed out for 2016 with a Black Edition special model before the lineup transitioned to the turbocharged 718 Cayman the following year.
