The 997.2 arrived for the 2009 model year as a comprehensive mid-cycle update to a generation already credited with restoring Porsche's reputation after the divisive 996. The changes ran deeper than the mildly reworked front bumper and LED daytime running lights suggested, with new direct-injection engines across nearly every trim, a PDK dual-clutch transmission replacing the old Tiptronic automatic, and meaningful power gains throughout the range to meet tightening European emissions standards without sacrificing performance.

The base Carrera carried forward its 3.6-liter flat-six at 325 hp, while the Carrera S stepped up to a 3.8-liter unit at 385 hp. The GTS arrived partway through the run in 2011, slotting between the S and GT3 with 408 hp from a reworked 3.8-liter, the same engine block used in the limited-edition Sport Classic and Speedster models, both of which shared that 408 hp output alongside their retro-inspired styling. The Turbo moved to a new 3.8-liter direct-injection engine at 500 hp, up from the 997.1's Mezger-derived 480 hp unit, and the Turbo S pushed that to 530 hp with a broader torque curve. On the naturally aspirated GT side, the GT3 grew to 3.8 liters and 435 hp, with the GT3 RS following at 450 hp, both revving to a scorching 8,500 rpm redline. The GT2 topped 523 hp using a rear-wheel-drive-only version of the Turbo's engine, before the GT2 RS arrived as the range's ultimate expression at 620 hp, the most powerful road-going 911 offered up to that point.
