About this model 997.2 Carrera / Carrera 4 / Targa 4

The 2009 facelift changed more about the 911 under the skin than any 997 update before it. Porsche didn't simply tune the existing Mezger-derived engine, it replaced it entirely, and paired that new engine with the first dual-clutch transmission ever offered on a 911, marking a genuine turning point for the platform's future.

Power comes from an all-new 3.6-liter flat-six with direct fuel injection, sharing not a single component with the outgoing 997.1 engine. Output rises to 345 hp and 288 lb-ft, a 20 hp and 15 lb-ft gain, with a higher 7,500 rpm rev limit than before. A 6-speed manual remains standard, but 2009 introduced the 7-speed PDK dual-clutch transmission, replacing the old Tiptronic S automatic entirely. Porsche quotes 0 to 60 mph in 4.8 seconds with the manual, 4.6 with PDK, and a 178 mph top speed for the rear-wheel-drive coupe.

Direct injection brought more than just added output, it eliminated the intermediate shaft (IMS) bearing design that had haunted earlier water-cooled Porsche flat-sixes, making the 997.2 generation a meaningfully safer bet for long-term ownership. The Carrera 4 gained an entirely new electronically controlled all-wheel-drive system borrowed from the 911 Turbo, replacing the old multi-plate viscous coupling and reacting to traction loss far faster without adding significant weight. Braking hardware grew too, with larger 318mm front and 299mm rear discs across the lineup. Visually, revised bumpers, LED daytime running lights and taillights, and updated wheel designs gave the whole range a sharper, more modern look, while the Targa 4 carried its glass roof and opening tailgate over from the previous generation unchanged.
